Wall Repair After Wallpaper Removal

Removing wallpaper and other wall coverings can cause damage for many different reasons. One of the most common is that the walls weren't sealed properly before the wallpaper was installed.

For wallpaper adhesive to bond correctly, walls need a smooth, washable surface created with primer and paint. If nothing was applied beforehand, removing the wallpaper can tear and damage the drywall, leaving behind rough surfaces that need repair before painting or installing new wallpaper.

If the walls were only primed, you have about a 50/50 chance of damage. Painting without primer can be just as bad as applying nothing at all, with the paint and sometimes even the drywall coming off with the wallpaper.

Many people think of sizing as a sealer that helps make wallpaper easier to remove later. Sizing was originally made to go on bare plaster walls to create a barrier, giving wallpaper adhesive something to stick to. Drywall and many modern wallpaper products don't need sizing. They need the right primer and paint to help protect the wall underneath.

Wall & Ceiling Repair

Our wall preparation and repair services cover cracks, corners, holes, and most anything else that needs fixing on your walls and ceilings.

Foundation settling cracks show up in almost everyone's home at some point. They often form around doors and windows and can hide underneath wallpaper until it's removed. Corners can have similar problems, with drywall tape wrinkling or pulling away from the wall.

Holes from nails, wall anchors, bathroom tissue holders, or even angry teenagers can usually be fixed. But the damage we repair most often is caused by the wallpaper removal process itself.

After two decades of practice, we know how to get walls looking smooth and ready for their next step, whether that's a fresh coat of paint or new wallpaper.
